Who is Ex Libris Editing?

Hello there! Ex Libris Editing is made up of Sylvia Cottrell and Sarah Heilman. Sylvia and Sarah were classmates in the Masters of Writing and Book Publishing program at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon from 2009 through 2011, and are both professional editors by trade. They joined forces under the Ex Libris Editing umbrella shortly after graduating, and now serve the creative communities of the West Coast and beyond.

Sylvia Cottrell, Ex Libris Editor

Sylvia founded Ex Libris directly after graduating from Portland State University in the spring of 2011. She has been involved in the professional editorial sphere for five years and is experienced with many types and levels of editing, including but not limited to copyediting, developmental manuscript edits, market copywriting and editing, and academic editing. Sylvia’s credentials include an MS in Writing and Book Publishing from Portland State University in 2011, a BA in English from the University of California Santa Cruz in 2007, and a Certificate of Completion in Book and Magazine Publishing from New York University Summer Publishing Institute in 2008. She most enjoys working with genre fiction (romance, sci fi, and fantasy in particular) as well as with young adult fiction. The best way to see if your project fits Sylvia’s skills and specialties is to contact her directly through the Contact page and strike up a conversation.

Sarah Heilman, Ex Libris Editor

A native Oregonian, Sarah is based in Portland. She holds a BA in Creative Writing from Linfield College and an MS in Writing and Book Publishing from Portland State University, arguably one of the best publishing programs in the country. Since graduating in 2011, she has provided contract editing services for Beyond Words Publishing, IT Revolution, Kepos Media, Thomas Riggs & Co., and numerous individual authors.

Sarah has experience editing a variety of genres and occasionally does project management work, but feels her true talents lie in developmental edits for fantasy (both high and urban), paranormal romance, post-apocalyptic, and speculative fiction. She also enjoys working on the occasional YA, middle grade, or light science fiction novel. Feel free to contact Sarah directly through the Contact page.
